A blank room, reimagined as a working studio

For the artist who worked here, colour and artwork weren't decoration — they were the whole point of the room.

An empty room with no fixed identity

Like most Sundays in Bed projects, this one began with an empty room in a newly handed-over home in Klang Valley — four walls with no fixed identity yet. It could easily have become a guest room or a home office instead. The artist who lived there wanted something more deliberate: a studio they'd actually want to work in, somewhere that held their own art and materials without turning cold or clinical in the process. The brief was less about layout than atmosphere — contemporary enough to feel considered, warm enough to spend a full day in.

Designing around colour and artwork

Rather than styling the room around furniture first, the design worked outward from two things the artist already had in abundance: colour and artwork. Their own pieces were treated as fixed points to design around, not additions to slot in afterward, and the palette, textures, and furnishings were chosen to sit comfortably alongside them rather than compete for attention. Warmer, contemporary furnishings and layered textiles did the rest of the work, softening what could easily have become a stark, purely functional space into one with real warmth.

The studio that emerged

The result is a room built specifically around how the artist works and what they make — a considered backdrop for the art rather than a generic spare room with a desk pushed into the corner. Colour carries the space, artwork gives it a focal point, and the contemporary furnishings hold the whole thing together without ever feeling staged.

How it feels now

What stands out isn't any single piece but the overall temperature of the room — cozy where a studio could easily have felt bare, contemporary without feeling untouched. It reads as lived-in and worked-in in equal measure, built around the artist rather than around a template.
